Program Cores
The Center of Excellence is composed of a multi-disciplinary team representing the diverse fields of Psychiatry, Psychology, Nursing, Epidemiology, Sociology, Social Work, and Health Services Research.
Clinical Interventions Research Core
Develop, adapt, test, and disseminate interventions to:
- Reduce suicidal thoughts and behavior among at-risk Veterans
- Monitor at-risk Veterans and link them with treatment and services
- Address key factors (e.g., depression) that lead to suicidal behavior of at-risk Veterans
Conduct research on the clinical epidemiology, etiology, and the course of suicidal thoughts and behavior among Veterans; improves access to care and enhances retention in treatment.
Epidemiology & Population Research Core
- Acquire and develop new sources of population level data
- Improve the timeliness and quality of suicide event data
- Improve estimation of rates of attempted suicide and suicide
- Identify changes in suicide or risk characteristics among Veterans
- Evaluate the impact of VA-sponsored suicide prevention programs
Education, Training & Dissemination Core
- Develop, deliver and evaluate Veteran population suicide prevention training and education for VA staff, Veterans and families, and the public
- Develop, deliver and evaluate VA-wide education programs for Suicide Prevention Coordinators, Case Managers and other members of suicide prevention teams
- Disseminate new knowledge acquired through the Center’s research activities
