Highlights from Our Anchor Sites

Our affiliates in Houston, Little Rock, New Orleans, and VISN 17 work hard to promote mental health education, research, and treatment locally and nationally. Here are some highlights of their accomplishments over the past three months.
Houston

- Drs. Terri Fletcher and Kyler Godwin Receive Norton Rose Fulbright Award

Congratulations to Drs. Fletcher and Godwin for receiving the Norton Rose Fulbright Faculty Excellence Award for exemplary educational contributions to the college. They will be recognized during BCM’s Awards Day celebration in May 2021.

- Dr. Darius Dawson Appointed to BCM Inclusion and Excellence Council

Congratulations to Dr. Dawson who was selected to serve as a postdoctoral member on the Baylor College of Medicine Inclusion and Excellence Council from 2020-2021.

- Dr. Lilian Dindo and Colleagues Featured in #VAResearchNewsBrief

Dr. Dindo and her team were featured in the VA Research News Brief and tweeted by VA Acting Deputy Secretary Pamela Powers for their publication on their VA-community organization partnership and intervention. The brief nicely shows the importance and effectiveness of community partnerships.

- BH QUERI Funded for Another Five Years

Congratulations to the Behavioral Health QUERI team for being funded for another five years! For this next phase in the BH QUERI journey, Drs. Sara Landes and Christopher Miller are taking over the principal investigator role from Drs. JoAnn Kirchner and Mark Bauer. The title of their newly funded grant is “Behavioral Health QUERI: Advancing 21st Century Mental Health Care for Veterans.”

- Dr. Sacha McBain Featured on UAMS Podcast

Dr. McBain joined UAMS Healthtalk to discuss dealing with stress, coping, and relationships during the COVID 19 pandemic.

- Dr. Prasad Padala and Colleagues Featured by Arkansas News Station

Dr. Padala was interviewed about his team’s published research on the perspectives of Veterans and caregivers currently enrolled in VA and NIH ongoing clinical trials, including their trust in the VA’s preparation to handle the COVID 19 pandemic.

- Dr. Gala True Presented at the Louisiana Suicide Prevention Virtual Summit

Dr. True presented at the Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs Virtual Third Annual Suicide Prevention Summit. Along with guest speakers Aimee Johnson, LCSW, Dawn Schiro, LCSW-BACS, MSW, and Matt Bailey, a Veteran champion on her VISION project, the presenters addressed safe firearm storage, safety planning as an effective form of intervention for suicide prevention, and preventing suicide by firearms or other lethal means.

- Dr. Daniel DeBrule Featured on Rocky Mountain MIRECC Podcast

An interview with Dr. DeBrule closed out season 4 of the Rocky Mountain MIRECC Short Takes on Suicide Prevention Podcast in August. In this episode, Dr. DeBrule shares his knowledge on posttraumatic growth and suicide.

- Dr. Muhammad Rais Baig Published in Psychiatric Quarterly

A paper on Dr. Baig’s FY19 SC MIRECC Clinical Education Product “Medication Management of PTSD in Veterans with Mild Traumatic Injury: A Pocket Card” was published in Psychiatric Quarterly in May. The article describes the development and dissemination of the tool for VA primary care providers.
