Clinical and Research Interests: Dr. Olson-Madden’s clinical interests are in suicide risk assessment and management, TBI and psychiatric comorbidities assessment and treatment, substance use, and PTSD. Much of her clinical work informs her research, and vice versa, particularly as it relates to interventional research. Dr. Olson-Madden’s primary research interests are related to risk reduction and prevention of medical and mental health disorders that are associated with risk for suicide. Broadly, her area of interest includes risk reduction/prevention and recovery from traumatic brain injury and psychiatric comorbidities such as post-traumatic stress disorder and substance use disorder. She has been involved in multiple projects examining the relationship between TBI and poor outcomes with emphases on assessment (screening, psychological assessment, and neurocognitive assessment), intervention, and dissemination of best practices for recovery and rehabilitation in VA and community settings. Dr. Olson-Madden’s work in studying comorbid TBI and substance use disorders has also led to an interest in prevention and intervention efforts targeted toward substance abusing Veterans. She is currently a site-PI for a federally-funded, multi-site, randomized clinical trial examining a CBT intervention for Veterans with substance use disorders who are also at risk for suicide.

Available Project(s) for Fellows: Accepting fellowship applications for 2018-2020. Applicants with interventionalist backgrounds are preferred. Fellows could be involved in current/available projects or may propose projects regarding feasibility and efficacy of a novel or modified intervention/prevention effort targeted towards individuals with comorbid psychiatric and physical health concerns (in particular, TBI). Secondary analyses related to an ongoing RCT of Veterans with suicidal ideation and substance use histories are also possible. Please contact Dr. Olson-Madden for more details, or to discuss possible interventional research ideas prior to applying.
