Natural Language Processing to Examine Phenomenological Experiences in Schizophrenia

with Chi Chan, PhD

The purpose of this live, knowledge-based webinar for interprofessional healthcare teams is to examine the phenomenological and psychological research in schizophrenia that suggests that a central feature of the illness is disturbances in self-experience, including a sense of alienation from one’s own experiences and actions. Studying self-experience can help us understand its relationship with clinical symptoms and functional outcome to inform etiology and treatment. However, a barrier to studying self-experience is that assessing it is time and resource intensive. This presentation will describe research that has used artificial intelligence and natural language processing to examine language related to self-experience in psychosis. This information will help bridge the gap for clinicans and will result in better Veteran care.

Program Description:
The Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Centers (MIRECC) at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx is an international leader in research and treatment of severe mental illness (SMI). The center pursues a discovery-to-recovery approach to determine the causes, identify predictors, and develop treatments for individuals with SMI, with emphasis on schizophrenia and suicide. The topics for this series consist of innovative treatments that we have created/tested and insights that have helped to develop that inform clinical care.

Erin Hazlett, PhDChi Chan, PhD is the Director of Education and Director of the Advanced Fellowship in Mental Illness Research and Treatment at the VISN 2 MIRECC, and Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. She is a New York State licensed psychologist. Dr. Chan received her PhD in Clinical Psychology from the University of Central Florida, completed her doctoral internship at UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior, and completed her postdoctoral fellowship at the VISN 2 MIRECC. Dr. Chan's research focuses on understanding the cognitive processes and corresponding neural mechanisms that are associated with severe mental illness, particularly psychotic spectrum disorders. She is interested in the implications of these cognitive processes on clinical symptoms and everyday functioning. Dr. Chan uses behavioral, neurocognitive, natural language processing, and neuroimaging methods to better understand brain-behavior relationships that can inform evidence-based treatments for severe mental illness.
