Biography

Biography: Dr. Mitzel is a second-year psychology fellow with the VA Advanced Fellowship in Mental Illness Research and Treatment program at the Center for Integrated Healthcare (CIH), based at the Syracuse VA Medical Center. Dr. Mitzel completed his graduate training at Syracuse University and earned his PhD in clinical psychology. He completed an APA-accredited predoctoral psychology internship at the Corporal Michael J. Crescenz VA Medical Center in Philadelphia, PA, which included PCMHI and sleep clinic rotations.

Research Interests: Dr. Mitzel’s research interests include health behaviors and the prevention and treatment of chronic conditions. He is interested in the VA’s Whole Health initiative as a novel approach to providing patient-centered, holistic care to increase patient engagement in their health and wellbeing, including prevention and management of chronic conditions, especially in the primary care setting. He is particularly interested in ways to assess and incorporate patient values into clinical interactions as a way to improve engagement in care. Other research interests include Whole Health program evaluation, medication adherence, CBT for Insomnia, and sexual health and risk behaviors.
