The Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Centers (MIRECC) at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx is an international leader in research and treatment of Severe Mental Illness (SMI). The center pursues a discovery-to-recovery approach to determine the causes, identify predictors, and develop treatments for individuals with SMI, with particular emphasis on schizophrenia and suicide. We conduct research on the etiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of SMI, implementing research-based, state-of-the-art clinical interventions. Our research spans from basic science to applied services research, employing biological, cognitive-behavioral, social, and systems research approaches.
The MIRECC annually offers postdoctoral fellowship training in SMI research. These unique opportunities allow fellows to train and work with outstanding mentors who are international leaders in SMI research. Our aim is to train psychologists and psychiatrists to become leading recovery-oriented clinician-scientists with a focus on SMI in veterans.
