AAPI Research Team
Lindsey L. Monteith, PhD (Principal Investigator)
Psychologist
Department of Veterans Affairs, Rocky Mountain MIRECC
My research seeks to ensure that suicide risk assessment and prevention initiatives are tailored to meet the diverse experiences, needs, and preferences of different groups. This has included a focus on survivors of trauma and interpersonal violence; women Veterans, and for this project, Asian American and Pacific Islander Veterans. To accomplish this, I believe it is critical to understand Veterans’ perspectives and experiences and to partner with them in this important work. I am honored to lead this project and look forward to learning from Asian American and Pacific Islander Veterans, as well as those with expert knowledge of these populations, to understand how we can take a culturally-informed approach to preventing suicide among Asian American and Pacific Islander Veterans.

My research focuses on improving VA and community healthcare providers’ uptake and effective use of best practices in suicide prevention for our Veterans. I am honored to be part of this important work, which will provide the opportunity to better understand the experiences of Asian American and Pacific Islander Veterans and use that knowledge to inform the development of culturally relevant suicide prevention resources and materials to enhance suicide risk assessment and intervention.
Ryan Holliday, PhD (Co-Investigator)
Psychologist
Department of Veterans Affairs, Rocky Mountain MIRECC
I am dedicated to improving our understanding of the intersection of trauma and life stressors, such as homelessness and justice involvement, on Veterans’ mental health. My research seeks to understand how we, as a health care system, can provide the best evidence-based care to Veterans who have experienced these occurrences throughout their lives. I am excited to be a part of this project, which will harness multiple approaches to understand how we can best prevent suicide among Asian American and Pacific Islander Veterans within and outside the VA.
Claire Hoffmire, PhD (Co-Investigator)
Epidemiologist
Department of Veterans Affairs, Rocky Mountain MIRECC
I am dedicated to improving our understanding of differences in Veteran suicide risk across historically underrepresented Veteran groups, such as racial and ethnic minority Veterans and women, to inform culturally-informed and gender-sensitive suicide prevention strategies. I believe it is critical that we consider diverse Veteran perspectives in research aiming to improve Veteran suicide prevention. I am honored to be part of this research effort to improve suicide prevention strategies for Asian American and Pacific Islander Veterans.
