Cognitive Behavior Therapy for Psychosis

MIRECC National Training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis

Yulia Landa, PsyD
yulia.landa@mssm.edu

CBTp Training Description:

We are pleased to announce the National Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp) training co-sponsored by VISNs 22 and 2.

This training course will provide clinicians with an overview of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Psychosis (CBTp). CBTp is an evidence-based treatment for schizophrenia and related disorders which complements pharmacological and other psychological treatments. The goal of CBTp is to create a collaborative treatment alliance in which the patient and therapist explore distressing psychotic experiences and the beliefs the patient has formed about these experiences. This is done in an effort to reduce suffering and improve functional capacity in the recovery process.

Research studies and clinical guidelines recommend Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for the Treatment and Prevention of Psychosis (CBTp) as a front-line intervention for individuals with psychotic-spectrum disorders. Despite this, only a few VA sites offer CBTp as part of routine care. Increased use of CBTp nationally can result in improved psychosocial functioning for Veterans with psychosis and reduced distress caused by psychotic symptoms and self-stigma. This training consists of two full days of live webinar followed by 6 monthly Community of Learning consultation calls. Mental Health providers who participate in this training will be equipped to provide a manualized, 16-session CBTp intervention called Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Voices and Worries to Veterans via live or telehealth delivery.

Target Audience:

The primary target audience for this activity consists of psychologists, physicians, social workers, and counselors within the VA system.

Outcome/Objectives:

At the conclusion of this educational program, learners will be able to:

  1. Discuss CBTp history and current state;
  2. Explain theoretical models if psychosis and CBTp;
  3. Discuss key principles of CBTp;
  4. Identify session structure of CBTp;
  5. Describe the cognitive model of delusions and interventions for delusions; and
