MIRECC Scientific Symposium on Motivation - Motivation has become a focus of study as researchers try to discover new ways to treat symptoms of schizophrenia. The VISN 22 MIRECC held a Scientific Symposium on Motivation to review the science and set new directions. CBTp: New Options for Veterans with Psychosis - CBTp is a clinically validated intervention for psychosis. The VISN 22 MIRECC is leading two initiatives: 1) a training program for VA clinicians in CBTp and 2) provision of CBTp nationally through the National TelePsychosis Program. Cognitive Training in Serious Mental Illness - For people living with serious mental illness (SMI), problems with thinking, learning, and memory can significantly impact functioning. Investigators in the VISN 22 MIRECC have conducted research in an effort to understand which type of cognitive training approach would be most effective for individuals with SMI and who would most benefit from cognitive training. |

Enhancing Community Integration for Homeless Veterans - Michael Green, PhD, Co-Director of the MIRECC Treatment Unit, has formed a new Rehabilitation Research and Development Center called THRIVe: Toward Homelessness Recovery and Integration. Loneliness in Aging with Schizophrenia - Barton Palmer, PhD, and his colleagues examine the effects of loneliness and aging on health among people with schizophrenia. The Effects of Racism among Veterans with Psychosis - The Desert Pacific MIRECC recently launched a program to solicit and fund up to three proposals in the coming year that focuses on racial disparities and the effects of racism on the functioning of individuals with psychotic mental illnesses. Shirley Glynn Wins Distinguished Career Award - Shirley Glynn, PhD, received the American Psychological Association, Division 18 Psychologists in Public Service Distinguished Career Award, reflecting her commitment to psychosocial treatments for serious psychiatric illness. |
