Rani A. Hoff, Ph.D., MPH
Dr. Rani Hoff received her Ph.D. in Health Services Research from Yale University in 1995. She is a Professor of Psychiatry at Yale University. Her research interests lie in three primary areas: the mental health of female Veterans; gambling and other impulse control disorders in both Veteran and civilian populations; and the evaluation of access, cost, and quality of mental health care in the VA health care system. Dr. Hoff's work involves exploring the risk and protective factors related to mental health services utilization, and the clinical outcomes associated with mental health care. Dr. Hoff is currently conducting a national study of sex differences in the health of returning Veterans (the SERV study). Recruitment and interviewing has been completed, and the final cohort is 850 Veterans, about 40% of whom are women. Longitudinal data was collected every three months for one year, and for those who agreed to continue every six months up to three years. The SERV study is the largest longitudinal cohort study to date that specifically examines sex differences in the health and mental health of returning Veterans. In her VA position, Dr. Hoff is the Director of the Northeast Program Evaluation Center (NEPEC) which is part of the evaluation arm of the Office of Mental Health Operations in VA Central Office. In this role, she is responsible for overseeing evaluation studies of mental health services in VA and in national implementations of mental health policy.
