Rocky Mountain Short Takes on Suicide Prevention: Looking 30 Years Ahead and 30 Years Behind with David A. Jobes, Ph.D., ABPP

9 August 2017

David Jobes

Earlier this summer I called Dave and hit the record button. What followed was a chance to look forward into the future of suicide prevention based on 30 years of work and research in our chosen field of suicide prevention. Listening to Dave you can get the sense that we are on the cusp of dramatic changes in how we treat the individuals in our care.

Our conversation, of course, touched on CAMS (Collaborative Assessment and Management of Suicidality); how could it not. Moving from the idea of collaboration it was an easy segue to the Zero Suicide Initiative because Zero Suicide is, in one sense, a collaboration between the frontline clinician and theeir organization to create a whole system to prevent suicide. But the chunk I found really fascinating had to do where Dave sees the field heading. It could be we are at a similar stage of early cancer care where all cancers were effectively treated in the same manner, throw everything at them. Dave says we may be at the point of recognizing that all suicide thoughts and behaviors are not the same and that treatment approaches can be tailored to meet each. Stick around to hear the whole whopping 64 minute podcast, it will be worth it.
