Drs. Jenn Bryan (first author), Ali Abbas Asghar-Ali, and coauthors’ article on the impact of a brief firearm safety to reduce suicide training on discussions between VA providers and Veterans was published in Suicide and Life-Threatening Behavior and highlighted in HSR&D Research Briefs. Findings showed that brief educational experiences can empower clinicians to discuss difficult topics such as firearm safety with Veterans – and that these discussions have the potential to reduce the rate of suicide by firearms among Veterans. The training can be viewed here.

Drs. Terri Fletcher, Julianna Hogan, and Jan Lindsay (co-authors) and colleagues’ article on the evaluation of patient preference for using video in a VA telehealth program was published in Telemedicine Reports. Results of this study show the impact of phone and video on the therapeutic relationship between Veterans and providers during remotely delivered care.

Dr. Gala True (co-author) and colleagues’ article on perspectives from emergency department clinical leaders on treating suicide in pediatric and geriatric patients was published in The Annals of Emergency Medicine. Findings showed that leaders felt ill-equipped to treat geriatric patients with suicidal ideation or attempts as they often had comorbidities that complicated treatment planning. They were also frustrated with the lack of outpatient and inpatient mental health services for these populations.

Drs. Shubhada Sansgiry, Natalie Hundt, Mark Kunik, and Jeffrey Cully (co-authors) and colleagues’ article on the association of PTSD with functional impact in Veterans with depression treated in community-based clinics was published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology in Medical Settings. Results highlight the complexity of comorbid mental health conditions frequently seen in community medical care clinics and suggest that patients with comorbid mental health difficulties may present with a complex array of mental health symptoms.
