- Bio: Dr. Gehrman is a clinical psychologist and researcher who came to the Philadelphia VAMC in 2003. His graduate work was at the University of California, San Diego and San Diego State University and he completed his predoctoral internship at the Durham, NC VAMC. He completed a postdoctoral fellowship in sleep medicine at the University of Pennsylvania. He was on the faculty at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia from 2004 to 2008 and has since been an Assistant Professor of Psychology in the Psychiatry Department of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Gehrman has been an investigator on research projects funded by the NIH, VA, and Department of Defense. He has been involved in the clinical training and research mentoring of psychology practicum students and postdoctoral fellows at both Penn and the Philadelphia VAMC. He is the clinical director of the Behavioral Sleep Medicine programs of the Penn and VA sleep centers. He also has an active telehealth program delivering cognitive behavioral treatment of insomnia to other VA facilities.
- Research Interests: Dr. Gehrman’s research is on the mechanisms and cognitive behavioral treatment of insomnia and nightmares in civilian and Veteran populations. He has investigated stress reactivity in individuals with insomnia and is now working on identifying genes that confer risk for insomnia. He is involved in a randomized trial of imagery rehearsal treatment for nightmares in Veterans with PTSD and a study examining neurobiological correlates of PTSD in OEF/OIF Veterans.
