VISN 2 MIRECC

The Mental Illness Research, Education and Clinical Center (MIRECC) at the James J. Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx is an internationally recognized leader in understanding, treating, and improving outcomes for Veterans with serious mental illness (SMI). Our discovery-to-recovery approach emphasizes uncovering the root causes of mental illness, identifying risk factors, and developing innovative treatments—particularly for schizophrenia and suicide. Our research spans the full spectrum from basic science to applied clinical services, incorporating biological, cognitive-behavioral, social, and systems-level approaches.
Our center also includes two specialized programs that enhance our mission through cutting-edge research and targeted clinical interventions:
Center for Precision Medicine and Translational Therapeutics
The Center for Precision Medicine and Translational Therapeutics, established in collaboration with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, leverages genetic and clinical data—such as the VA’s Million Veteran Program—to tailor treatment approaches to each Veteran’s unique biological, environmental, and lifestyle factors. Led by renowned researchers, this center is dedicated to transforming scientific discovery into precise, personalized therapies that significantly enhance the quality of life for Veterans.
Transitioning Servicemember/Veteran and Suicide Prevention Center (TASC)
TASC focuses on the critical period of transition from military service to civilian life, aiming to reduce suicide risk and improve mental health outcomes for Servicemembers and Veterans. Through evidence-based programming, predictive analytics, and cultural competence training, TASC addresses the unique challenges Veterans face during reintegration. Monthly Veteran Cultural Competence trainings educate providers and community stakeholders on effectively understanding and supporting Veterans in their care.
Training Future Leaders
Additionally, VISN 2 MIRECC offers robust postdoctoral fellowship opportunities each year, training psychologists and psychiatrists to become skilled, recovery-oriented clinician-scientists who specialize in serious mental illness research and care. Our fellows receive mentorship from globally recognized experts, contributing to a vibrant, innovative research environment dedicated to improving Veteran health and well-being.
