Research InterestsMy research focuses on understanding and preventing suicide attempts, suicide, and overdoses in high-risk populations including Veterans. A primary interest of mine has been the development and examination of brief, person-centered, interventions for suicide prevention. I am currently testing the impact of Motivational Interviewing to Address Suicidal Ideation (MI-SI) on suicidal ideation and risk for non-fatal attempts among Veterans at high-risk for suicide. Another interest is the effectiveness of the Veterans Crisis Line (VCL). When I was researcher-in-residence at the VCL, I completed an effectiveness study that has resulted in multiple follow-up studies. I am currently conducting a multi-method (quantitative/qualitative) study of emergency dispatches (i.e., 911 calls) among Veteran VCL callers. I am also examining the impact of treatment contact following a VCL call on suicidal behavior, among callers without recent VHA healthcare contact. An additional interest is the prevention of intentional and unintentional overdoses, particularly among individuals who misuse opioids. I also value my collaborations with researchers inside and outside VA on projects testing couple and relationship interventions for reducing suicide risk, examining the reduction of opioid use and overdoses among opioid using Veterans in the community, studying the facilitation of healthy behaviors among re-integrating Veterans to reduce suicide risk, and tailoring suicide prevention efforts to the needs of female Veterans. |
