- Bio: Dr. Steinhauer received his Ph.D. in Psychology from the Neuropsychology program of the Graduate Center, City University of New York. His research training on the psychophysiology of human information processing and psychopathology was conducted at Queens College, CUNY, and the Columbia University/NY Psychiatric Institute-based Biometrics Research Unit, including laboratories at the Brooklyn State Hospital.
- He joined the Department of Psychiatry/Psychiatric Institute and with Joseph Zubin established the Biometrics Research Program at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS) and University of Pittsburgh in 1977. Dr. Steinhauer is Director of the Biometrics Research Program, serves on several editorial boards and has been a member of multiple NIH study sections. At the VA, he serves as Acting Deputy Associate Chief of Staff for Research. He is currently supervising one VA postdoctoral fellow and one K-award mentee at the University of Pittsburgh.

- Research Interests: Dr. Steinhauer’s Biometrics Research Program is devoted to understanding physiological correlates of cognition in individuals with and without psychopathology. Brain activity is assessed through measurement of pupil dilation, event-related potentials (ERPs), including P300, N400, and very late slow waves, electrocardiography (ECG),and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
- Specific clinical populations of interest have included patients with schizophrenia, depression, alcohol abuse, PTSD, and exposure to toxic solvents. The program at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System is affiliated with the Department of Psychiatry, School of Medicine, University of Pittsburgh.
