The VA Capitol Health Care Network (VISN 5) MIRECC Administrative Data Sub-Unit utilizes administrative data on VISN 5 Veterans' healthcare encounters, inpatient stays, and receipt of prescription medications for three main purposes:
- to support system evaluation and quality improvement for the VISN 5 Mental Health Clinical Center;
- to provide summary data on patients to other MIRECC investigators for the purpose of planning research grant applications; and
- to carry out research studies of healthcare utilization and cost.
In support of the VISN 5 Mental Health Clinical Center, the MIRECC addresses clinical and financing issues that are current priorities within the VISN or at particular facilities. In research activities, the Administrative Data Sub-Unit uses VA administrative data to examine utilization of healthcare services and medications by Veterans with mental illness or substance use disorder diagnoses in VISN 5. The analyses of the Administrative Data Sub-Unit often focus on lapses in receipt of needed care and on potential areas of need for improvement in the quality of care received. Recent projects have focused on continuity in receipt of antipsychotic medications among persons with schizophrenia and receipt of psychiatric medications and psychotherapy among Veterans with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) diagnoses. The Administrative Data Sub-Unit meets monthly and is interested in ideas for new projects from VISN 5 healthcare staff and researchers.
