Visual Abstracts

A primary goal of the Rocky Mountain MIRECC Education Core is take the research that is done here and make it accessible to everyone. We do this with our podcasts, presentations, this website, and now through visual abstracts. In almost all cases the research that we do ends up in published form in a peer reviewed scientific journal. Reading these may be what some people love to do but for many of us a visual enhances our understanding. The goal of the visual abstract is to present the information in a compelling visual way that lets the user decide whether they want to pursue 'the rest of the story.'

Tutorial - Beyond Journals: Creating Visual Abstracts for Wider Research Dissemination

Our Education Media Specialist, Audrey Cobb, created this online tutorial to help others create visual abstracts. The tutorial provides a useful introduction that serves as the basis for the what and why of a visual abstract. The tutorial also covers planning, design principles and creating (in which there is a nice video showing how to use Adobe's free tool Spark for creating visuals). The tutorial can be found at: https://www.mirecc.va.gov/visn19/education/visual_abstracts/creating/.
