Health Services Lab

The VISN 6 MIRECC Health Services Research Lab was established in 2005 and conducts innovative health services research focused on the MIRECC’s theme of post-deployment mental health. The objective is to develop strategies that enhance the effectiveness, quality, and cost-efficiency of mental healthcare among Veterans. These objectives are strategically pursued through intramural and extramural funded research and teaching programs. The Health Services Research Lab maintains close organizational ties with the VA Center for Health Services Research in Primary Care, an HSR&D Center of Excellence (CoE), the Duke University Traumatic Stress and Health Laboratory, and the Durham VAMC Mental Health Service Line. We achieve our goals by partnering with VHA stakeholders including our medical center, VISN 6 leadership, and national VA program offices such as the VA Public Health National Prevention Program and the National Center for Health Promotion and Disease Prevention.

Current areas of focus include (1) a comprehensive needs assessment of OEF/OIF/OND Veterans (2) Innovative interventions to improve PTSD care, (3) Research aimed at improving the accurate assessment of PTSD, substance use, and other related problems such as anger and aggression, and (4) Interventions aimed at reducing health risk behaviors among returning Veterans.
