Dr. Kaela Joseph is a queer and nonbinary clinical and research psychologist with over 10 years of experience training and working in VA settings. The majority of their work has focused on health care equity, specifically health care equity for transgender, gender diverse, and intersex Veterans. This includes directing and co-founding a multidisciplinary comprehensive gender affirming care center. They joined this study in the hopes of continuing that work, specifically as it applies to suicide prevention interventions. As a gender diverse person themself, they know all too well how suicide impacts our communities, and they are committed to enacting meaningful change.

Dr. Michael Vallario is a queer and nonbinary clinical psychologist working in both VA and community settings and has spent over 10 years focusing on efforts related to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. In addition to serving as one of 3 LGBTQ+ Veteran Care Coordinators and facilitating their VA’s monthly transgender support group, they also collaborate on a broader scale as a DEI consultant and subject matter expert in LGBTQ+ Issues for the Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. They have been fortunate to have been involved in several major projects, including a nonbinary Veteran factsheet, a published paper on the experiences of gender diverse students training in VA psychology programs, and a national symposium, all of which were aimed toward improving awareness and patient care with gender diverse individuals. As a member of the LGBTQ+ community within the VA and externally, they are committed to affirming and uplifting the identities that have been most stigmatized. They were brought on to consult for this study based on their experience in both suicide prevention and work with transgender Veterans.
