R. Ross MacLean, Ph.D.
Dr. R. Ross MacLean is a licensed Psychologist at the VA Connecticut Healthcare System in West Haven CT. He is also an Assistant Professor in the Yale School of Medicine. He completed his doctorate at Pennsylvania State University and completed his clinical internship at VA Connecticut Healthcare System. His clinical and research interests focus on developing treatments for addiction and co-occurring conditions. More specifically, he is interested in treatments that have a low patient/provider burden and leverage technology to deliver treatment and better measure treatment outcomes. This includes the use of intensive longitudinal methods such as ecological momentary assessment (EMA) to track progress and engage individuals in treatment. He is currently the recipient of a 5-year VA Clinical Science R&D Career Development Award to develop a brief behavioral pain treatment for Veterans with opioid use disorder receiving medications for opioid use disorder.

- An adaptive walking intervention to manage chronic pain in veterans with opioid use disorder engaged (PI)
A Clinical Science Research and Development (CSR&D) CDA-2 to develop and evaluate a brief behavioral pain treatment for Veterans with OUD and chronic pain. 2021 – 2025. - Adapting Web-based CBT to Improve Adherence and Outcome for Individuals with Opioid Use Disorder and Chronic Pain Treated with Opioid Agonists (co-I)
A National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH) funded study to develop and pilot test an integrated, web-based cognitive behavioral approach (R61 phase), and conduct a randomized clinical trial evaluating its efficacy relative to standard care in individuals with chronic pain treated with buprenorphine or methadone (R33 phase). 2019 – 2024. - Establishment of an evidence-based threshold for steps per day to evaluate clinical improvement in chronic pain treatment (PI)
A locally initiated project funded through VA Health Services Research and Development (HSR&D) grant to establish threshold for daily steps increase for individuals with chronic pain in pain treatment using secondary data from clinical trials. 2022 – 2023. - Acceptance and Commitment Therapy to Improve Social Support for Veterans with PTSD (Site-PI/ PI:Megan Kelly)
A VA Rehabilitation Research and Development (RR&D) Merit award that evaluates ACT-SS vs. PCT, a common treatment for social support difficulties across three sites. 2020 – 2024. - Opioid and pain cognitive bias modification in opioid use disorder (PI)
A VISN-1 Career Development award that evaluated cognitive bias modification for opioid and pain cues in Veterans with OUD and chronic pain. 2018-2020.
