Neurocognition Lab

This lab serves the MIRECC objectives by providing comprehensive psychological and neuropsychological assessment of post-deployment signs, symptoms, and disorders, with particular emphasis on posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). Three main objectives are pursued by the Neurocognition Lab:

I. longitudinal neurocognitive assessment
II. computerized psychiatric symptom assessment
III. examination of cognitive processes underlying PTSD symptom expression

The longitudinal neurocognitive and computerized symptom assessments are directed at examination of individuals with PTSD, TBI or both conditions compared with controls matched on relevant variables such as age, sex, and combat exposure. Durham, Richmond, and Salisbury VAMCs have collectively evaluated over 250 subjects.

More recent work is also examining the application of virtual reality (VR) and other computerized approaches to the measurement of perceptual, cognitive, and motor processes with the goal of promoting learning and rehabilitation in TBI. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) will be used to examine improvements in eye-hand coordination and changes in activation of brain regions as a result of VR interventional approaches.
