Advances by the SC MIRECC Clinical Care Core
The SC MIRECC Clinical Care Core’s mission is to serve as a resource and facilitator for local, regional, and national initiatives designed to improve access to high quality mental health care for Veterans. Mainstay initiatives of the Clinical Care Core have included clinical demonstration projects to advance care for Veterans and partnerships such as the Consumer Advocacy Board (CAB), which is comprised of Veterans who donate their time to help improve SC MIRECC projects and programs. Within the last year, the Clinical Care Core has worked to improve the depth and breadth of these programs but has also added new programming. We would like to bring your attention to two new initiatives:
The Clinical Input Committee (CIC), inspired by the incredible impact of the CAB, is comprised of VHA mental health clinicians and leaders who offer input on SC MIRECC programs and projects. The CIC provides a unique perspective and helps to ensure that projects and programs align with, and address, high priority issues facing Veterans. The primary objective of the CIC is to provide input to researchers, educators, leaders, and fellow clinicians who are developing or improving mental health care through projects or programs. The CIC has been meeting since November 2023 and is led by Dr. Mary Shapiro (New Orleans).
If you are in VISN 16 and are interested in learning more about the CIC – or if you are interested in presenting your work – please see the flyer, visit the CIC website, or email the CIC Administrative Team.

The Mentored Clinician Quality Improvement Program (MC-QIP) led by Dr. Kelley Arredondo (Houston), is a mentored training program for mental health providers in VISN 16 who have interest in pursuing quality improvement (QI) efforts. The goal of MC-QIP is to develop experts in QI through tailored training to meet providers “where they are" and advance their skills to improve mental health services at their facility and/or within VISN 16. The program training leverages a combination of online, didactics, project experiences, and mentoring and includes 3 tracks (introductory, intermediate, and advanced).
The SC MIRECC Clinical Care Core launched the MC-QIP in October of 2024 but intends to enroll additional training cohorts in the near future (likely in the Spring of 2025). To learn more about MC-QIP please view the flyer or visit the website for additional information.
